Muscle and Joint Pain
A large review of multiple studies released in 2013 about the medicinal uses of Comfrey stated: "It is clinically proven to relieve pain, inflammation and swelling of muscles and joints in the case of degenerative arthritis, acute myalgia in the back, sprains, contusions and strains after sports injuries and accidents, also in children aged 3 years and older."
In the studies, Comfrey's application improved the healing and pain response of bruises, sprains, painful muscles, and joints which were particularly related to exercise. In a single-blind, randomized clinical trial of 164 participants, Comfrey outperformed its pharmaceutical counterpart for its efficacy on ankle sprains and pain. This led the researchers to state their encouragement that this natural product functions as a safe and effective alternative to the standard treatment.
Comfrey’s healing properties also encompass the skin, with its wonder ingredient – allantoin – hydrating, naturally exfoliating, repairing, protecting, and soothing the skin. Due to Comfrey’s high antioxidant status, the topical application also helps to reduce free radical activity on the skin.
Natural allantoin as found in Comfrey can actually help to reduce abnormal thickening of the skin caused by “keratinisation” - if this is out of balance more keratin than usual is produced and the structure of the barrier function is changed. Allantoin interacts with the skin’s keratin to thin out an abnormal, thick stratum corneum, and this is the reason that allantoin is known for leaving skin feeling smooth.
Comfrey can also be used to relieve skin irritations such as rashes, sunburn, and stings.

My daughter Arro struggles with severe limb pain and I wanted to make a salve for her that helps give her some relief without steroids, pain meds etc. This gives her almost immediate relief from her pain and she definitely likes the cooling feeling!

BENEFITS OF White Willow Benefits
Willow’s active chemical constituent – salicin – was identified in 1829 by the French pharmacist H Leroux. Whilst this chemical is a powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic, studies show several other components of Willow bark (including polyphenols and flavonoids), have antioxidant, fever-reducing, antiseptic, and immune-boosting properties. Some studies show that this plant is as effective as aspirin for reducing pain and inflammation at much lower doses.
It has been shown to relieve headaches and is less likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects than synthesized pain relievers such as ibuprofen. Those who suffer from chronic and/or recurring headaches are strongly advised to seek help from their healthcare professional. In a well-designed study of 200 people with lower back pain, those who received White Willow bark experienced a significant reduction in pain compared with those who received a placebo. Furthermore, people who received higher doses had more significant pain relief.
The active components in White Willow bark have been shown to inhibit cyclooxygenase – an enzyme responsible for inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins. Salicin will also ease the discomfort, further reducing the production of prostaglandins in the nerves and its anti-inflammatory properties help in reducing painful inflammation of the joints. It is thought that regular intake of White Willow bark will help to suppress the progression and onset of arthritis.
Arnica is rich in phytonutrient helenalin, and it is this potent compound that is responsible for the exceptional healing abilities of this plant. It works to relieve swelling and speed up the healing of bruises by stimulating the body’s white blood cells to break down the fluid and excess blood that is trapped in the joints, muscles, and bruises. The increased numbers of white blood cells stop broken capillaries from bleeding into the surrounding tissue. Arnica also stimulates blood circulation to the affected area, bringing the resources and oxygen to heal broken blood vessels and produce healthy new cells.
Arnica contains lactones which are naturally anti-inflammatory and can work to bring down swelling and alleviate pain. They inhibit the production of Nuclear Factor Kappa Beta (NF-kβ), a protein complex that plays a key role in regulating the immune system’s response to infection and tissue damage. By preventing the activation of NF-kβ at the start of the inflammatory process Arnica can provide immediate pain relief and a significant reduction in swelling.
Muscle Soreness/Sports Injuries
The helenalin and other anti-inflammatory-related compounds found in Arnica are particularly effective at reducing the muscle soreness and pain associated with sports injuries. It has also been found to reduce the muscle damage that can hinder athletic performance.
A study published in the “European Journal of Sport and Science”, found that the participants who used topical Arnica experienced less muscle soreness and pain 72 hours after intense exercise.
Arnica is also rich in thymol, which is an effective vasodilator of the capillaries found in the subcutaneous fat just under the skin. The widening of these vessels allows for the transport of blood and anti-inflammatory compounds which further aid the healing process.

The main chemical constituents of Peppermint essential are Menthol, Menthone, and 1,8-Cineole, Menthyl acetate and Isovalerate, Pinene, Limonene, and other constituents. The most active of these components are Menthol and Menthone. Menthol is known to be an analgesic and is thus beneficial for reducing pain such as headaches, muscle aches, and inflammation. Menthone is known to be analgesic as well, but it is also believed to show antiseptic activity. Its invigorating properties lend the oil its energizing effects.
Used medicinally, Peppermint has been found to eliminate harmful bacteria, relieve muscle spasms and flatulence, disinfect and soothe inflamed skin, and release muscle tension when used in a massage. When diluted with a carrier oil and rubbed into the feet, it can work as a naturally effective fever reducer.
Used cosmetically or topically in general, Peppermint acts as an astringent that closes pores and tightens the skin. Its cooling and warming sensations make it an effective anesthetic that leaves the skin numb to pain and calms redness and inflammation. It has traditionally been used as a cooling chest rub to relieve congestion, and when diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut, it can promote the safe and healthy renewal of skin, thus offering relief from skin irritations such as sunburn. In shampoos, it can stimulate the scalp while also removing dandruff.
When used in aromatherapy, Peppermint expectorant properties clear the nasal passageway to promote the relief of congestion and to encourage easy breathing. It is believed to stimulate circulation, reduce feelings of nervous tension, soothe feelings of irritability, boost energy, balance hormones, and enhance mental focus. The scent of this analgesic oil is believed to help relieve headaches, and its stomachic properties are known to help suppress the appetite and promote the feeling of being full. When diluted and inhaled or when rubbed in small amounts behind the ear, this digestive oil can reduce the feeling of nausea.
